What Is Universal Design?

Universal design, previously referred to as Barrier Free Design, is about designing for everyone.

It’s a way of creating environments and products that are usable for all people, regardless of age, ability or situation. Universally-designed buildings and systems can be used throughout our lives, allowing us to lead a healthy and inclusive life.

Some examples of universal design are as simple as “no step” level entry building entrances, which allows everyone to move in and out of buildings, whether they’re moving equipment, pushing a baby stroller or using a wheelchair.

Universal design features can be seen at local community centres with level-entry shower stalls and sloping entry into the swimming pool, sloped sidewalks at street crossings, gently sloping entry ramps. Lever handles on door handles and faucets often seen in modern homes and buildings allow for operation without the need to grasp and twist.

Although most building codes mandate certain universal features for commercial and public facilities, it just makes good sense to create inclusivity for everyone to enjoy as well as business sense. The more people who can access your business or facility, the more customers you’ll attract for your business to flourish.

As one grows and ages, our needs also change. How you use your home, access public facilities and how you interact in the community are all part of this. Universal design makes your quality of life better, enabling you to accomplish your everyday tasks efficiently and easily. You’ll be able to fully participate and maintain independence for longer, when universal design features exists.

Thinking long term, a home designed this way also helps you avoid costly future renovations to adapt the space to your needs later in life. In addition, your home will be more valuable for potential future re-sale if it features universal design elements.
